Oman

I have many things I try out on this blog and see if anything is funny/interesting/satisfying, so let me know...
And the next on this list are informal travel reviews. (all pics mine, unless otherwise noted)
Oman:
reason for going - I spent a month learning Arabic and living in an apartment building with classmates. We had a few planned excursions, but we were mainly left on our own to explore.
location -

fun fact - The country is surrounded by the heaviest fortified borders in the Middle East, so it is one of the safest to visit right now.
weather - I went in the middle of July when it was consistently 110 degrees with 80% humidity. The best weather is in the winter months (don't worry, the ocean will still be warm).
food - Oman doesn't have it's own cuisine (or if it does it is not prominent at all), so the food has heavy influence from the Levant, Southeast Asia, and Northwest Africa.
people - Omanis are the nicest and most caring group of people I have ever meant. There are really open to talking with foreigners.
clothing - Omani men and women cover their heads and where full length robes, so dress very modestly, out of respect for the locals.
landscape/things to do - The country is still really undeveloped so much of the country is in it's natural landscape, which includes everything from mountain ranges, to desert, to beautiful beaches.

Jebel Akhdar (literally means green mountain) is the best mountain range and is great for hiking. It is found an hour from the capitol and biggest city, Muscat.

Sea turtle reservations are located along the coast to watch turtles lay eggs and baby turtles find their way to the ocean.
Bimmah Sink Hole is a gorgeous, natural sink hole about 45 minutes from the capitol that is 100% safe to swim in.

Souk Muttrah is a great spot to buy anything Omani, where you can negotiate for prices. Muttrah is the old port of Muscat and the souk is the oldest functioning one in the Middle East.

Salalah is another town in the south of the Oman and has a completely different feel because get this: it's a jungle.
